8 Mondello Beach: A Paradise Not to Be Missed During Your Visit to Palermo!

Mondello Beach is a paradise you can’t miss during your visit to Palermo! Located just a few kilometers from the city center, this beach is famous for its crystal-clear waters and golden sand, making it the perfect place to relax and enjoy the Sicilian sun.

Whether you prefer soaking up the sun on the soft sand, taking a refreshing swim in the sea, or enjoying water sports, Mondello Beach has everything you need for an unforgettable day. If you’re a fan of windsurfing (just like me!), this place is perfect! I recommend checking out the Albaria Windsurfing Club where you can take lessons or rent the equipment to spend an afternoon practicing.

You can take bus 806 from Palermo to get there. Just a heads up, if you go during the peak months like July and August, be prepared for crowds! If possible, try to avoid weekends. Here’s a bonus tip: Right in front of the beach entrance is the Scimone pastry shop, which has the best Ciambelle you’ll ever find. The pistachio one is amazing – you can’t miss it!

9 The Street Via Vittorio Emanuele

The Street Via Vittorio Emanuele is one of the most vibrant and lively commercial arteries in Palermo. Known for its shops, cafes, and rich history, this pedestrian street is a must-visit for any visitor to the city.

It’s particularly famous for the pastry shop located in the old monastery of the church: I Segreti del Chiostro, which offers the best typical Sicilian sweets in Palermo. Made with centuries-old recipes and local ingredients, from delicious cannoli filled with ricotta cheese to Sicilian cassata, a decadent sponge cake filled with sweetened ricotta and covered with marzipan, the pastry shop offers a delicious variety of treats to satisfy any sweet craving.

12 Piazza Quattro Canti

Piazza Quattro Canti, also known as Piazza Vigliena, is an octagonal square located at the intersection of two major streets in Palermo, Via Maqueda and Corso Vittorio Emanuele. What makes this square unique is its symmetrical design, with four identical sides, each representing one of the four seasons of the year and one of the four known parts of the world at that time: Europe, Africa, Asia, and America.

Each of the four sides of the square is flanked by a Baroque building adorned with statues and decorations representing elements related to the season and the part of the world they symbolize. The square is an iconic landmark in Palermo and an important center of activity for both residents and visitors.

13 International Puppet Museum Antonio Pasqualino

The International Puppet Museum Antonio Pasqualino is a cultural treasure in the heart of Palermo, Sicily. This unique museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting the art and tradition of puppetry, both in Sicily and around the world.

As you enter the museum, you’ll encounter an impressive collection of puppets of all shapes and sizes, spanning different styles and traditions. From traditional Sicilian puppets to elaborate puppets from other countries, each piece tells a unique and fascinating story about culture and folklore.

The Catacombs of the Capuchins are a unique and intriguing site that offers a window into Palermo’s past. Situated beneath the Capuchin convent, these catacombs are known for their impressive displays of mummies and their role in the city’s history and culture. Here, amid dark corridors and silent crypts, you’ll find hundreds of mummified bodies, each with its own story to tell. From nobles and clergy to common citizens, these mummies offer a unique insight into life and death in Sicily over the centuries.

In addition to the mummies, the Catacombs of the Capuchins also house an impressive collection of religious relics, historical artifacts, and artworks. These exhibits provide a broader insight into the history and culture of Palermo, from antiquity to the modern era.

15 La Iglesia de Jesús

The Church of Jesus (Chiesa del Gesù in Italian), also known as Casa Professa, is the most important Baroque building in Palermo. It is especially known for its exquisite interior decoration, which includes numerous elaborate details such as marble reliefs and the magnificent dome. In my opinion, it is the most impressive church in Palermo – you can’t miss it!

16 Rinascente Observatory

Would you like to see Palermo from above? At the rooftop of the iconic department store El Rinascente, you’ll find an observatory and restaurant offering impressive panoramic views of the Sicilian city. Here, you can enjoy delicious food while taking in the grandeur of Palermo from high above.

17 No Mafia Memorial

Discover a space of memory and reflection at the No Mafia Memorial in Palermo. This poignant memorial pays tribute to the victims of the mafia and remembers the sacrifices of those who bravely stood up to this criminal organization.

As you enter the No Mafia Memorial, you’ll find yourself surrounded by an atmosphere of solemnity and respect. Through audiovisual displays, photographs, and testimonies, the memorial takes you on an emotional journey highlighting the devastating influence of the mafia on Sicilian society and the struggle of those who have lost their lives in this fight for justice and freedom.

18 The Cala and the Palermo Marina Yachting

The new port of Palermo, inaugurated at the end of 2023, The Palermo Marina Yachting, with green areas, terraces, walkways, and musical fountains with incredible illuminations. The place is truly beautiful, with its famous dancing fountain, the largest in Europe. Surrounding it are shops, and many of the best restaurants in Palermo have been installed here; you can eat or have an aperitif with a beautiful sea view.

19 The Foro Italico

Looking for a quiet place to relax in the heart of Palermo? The Umberto I Forum, also known as the Italic Forum, is the answer! With its spacious green areas, cozy benches overlooking the sea, winding paths, and food carts. This public space invites you to enjoy a moment of calm and tranquility amidst the bustle of the city. Additionally, you’ll find a variety of restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy delicious local meals or simply have a coffee while admiring the urban landscape.

20 Vucciria

I deliberately left the Vucciria Market for last because, in my opinion, you can’t leave Palermo without visiting this market at least once at night. It’s one of those things you have to do to truly understand the essence of Palermo – you either love it or hate it. Now, this isn’t for everyone; if you found Palermo dirty, noisy, and didn’t like it in general, then you definitely don’t have to go to Vucciria. But if you’re curious and love dancing until dawn, then head to Vucciria! This market comes to life at night, with music for dancing, lots of people, and locals and visitors alike enjoying the atmosphere.

You can dine or have an aperitif at one of the many restaurants nearby and stay until the party starts! A couple of recommendations: be careful with your drinks, and watch your belongings closely (I met at least 3 people who had their cell phones stolen here). If you’re a woman, I wouldn’t recommend going alone! If you’re traveling solo (like I did the first time I went to Palermo), join this Pub Crawl – it’s great for meeting people, and they usually end the tour in Vucciria!

Before we dive into our 3-day itinerary for Rome, here are the 3 things I wish I had known before going to Rome:

1. No matter when you go, Rome will ALWAYS be crowded, so be mentally prepared to navigate through waves of people. If you want to enjoy some sights like the Trevi Fountain or the Spanish Steps without the crowds, aim to arrive around 6 in the morning.
2. Buy your tickets in advance! This is essential as tickets can sell out quickly, and leaving it until the last minute may result in not finding any or having to pay much more.
3. Public transportation in Rome is not reliable. Firstly, the metro is quite small (normal for a city with so many historical monuments underground). Buses can take a long time, especially at night. So, be prepared to do a lot of walking!

We’re ready now, we can go onto our main agenda: the complete 3-day itinerary for Rome!

Day 1 of the 3-day Rome itinerary: Discover Ancient Treasures

The Colosseum

Get ready to dive into Rome’s history with a visit to the majestic Colosseum! This iconic monument is a symbol of the greatness of the Roman Empire and a silent witness to centuries of history. Trevi Fountain

*If you want to see the Trevi Fountain without crowds, then start your day here. You have to arrive around 6 in the morning, that’s when people start arriving, it’s the best way to take the perfect photo.*

Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the magic of the Trevi Fountain both day and night. During the day, the fountain shines under the sun, offering a breathtaking spectacle of water and marble. At night, the lights that illuminate the fountain make it an even more charming and romantic destination. Also, don’t forget to participate in the tradition of tossing a coin over your left shoulder into the fountain, a gesture said to ensure a prompt return to the Eternal City.

Spanish Square

Then we have the twin churches, known as the “Twin Churches of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto,” located on opposite sides of the square, adding a touch of symmetry and harmony to this urban space. There is also the imposing Egyptian obelisk, which rises majestically in the center of the square.

During a period in history when the construction of fixed houses was prohibited (or heavily taxed), these precarious homes were built without the use of mortar so they could be easily dismantled. Thus, when the king’s delegate was about to arrive to collect taxes, it was enough to remove the keystone, and voilà! The houses transformed into piles of stones.

In addition to its fascinating architecture, Alberobello offers an unparalleled cultural experience. From tasting delicious local cuisine in cozy restaurants to exploring craft shops and typical products, there’s something for everyone. Don’t miss out on these 6 places to visit in Alberobello and get ready for an unforgettable experience in this unique corner of the world.

Look up and observe closely, you’ll notice on many trulli the typical symbols on the domes, which can vary and have different meanings depending on the specific design and local tradition. Some of the common symbols include:

2. Stars: Stars can symbolize hope, good fortune, or protection against the evil eye and other negative influences.

The Aia Piccola district includes 400 still inhabited trulli. I’d said it’s the residential area of Alberobello. It’s a characteristic corner to relive the atmosphere of the village, without the chaos of commercial activities. This area is less known and much less commercial, so here you can admire the beauty of Alberobello without the tourist hustle and bustle.

Exploring Aia Piccola is immersing yourself in the history and culture of Alberobello, while admiring the beauty of these homes and learning about local traditions. In addition to the trulli, the district houses a lively central square, where locals gather and visitors can enjoy authentic Italian hospitality in local cafes and restaurants.

4 The House of Love

The House of Love is one of the most picturesque trulli in Alberobello, located in the charming district of Aia Piccola. This trullo, with its distinctive conical roof and white facade, evokes a sense of charm and authenticity that captivates visitors.

The Trullo Soberano is the only trullo with a raised floor, accessible from the inside via a staircase, one of the first to be built with mortar. The majestic conical dome, standing about 14 meters tall, rises imposingly in the center of a group formed by twelve cones. It is located behind the Church of Saints Medici Cosma and Damiano.

The most typical preparation is Orecchiette with cime di rapa, served with a condiment made from broccoli raab (cime di rapa), garlic, and olive oil.

2 Take a walk down Via delle Orecchiette

At the heart of Bari’s historic center lies Via delle Orecchiette, also known as Via Arco Basso, a picturesque street infused with the delightful aroma of fresh pasta, especially the Orecchiette, a culinary specialty of the Puglia region. As you wander along this cobblestone street, you’ll witness skilled local Nonnas handcrafting these small and delicious pastas in their homes with open doors. Observe their expert skills as they prepare this traditional dish and feel like a part of the city’s daily life. You can also take the opportunity to purchase these delicious handmade pastas! They make an ideal gift!

If you want to try the traditional dishes of the region right in the historic center, I recommend going to taste the orecchiette con cime di rapa, or any of the other traditional dishes they prepare at La Cantina dello Zio, a small traditional restaurant that serves incredible and delicious dishes!

3 Watch the Sunset from Lungomare Promenade

Bari’s Lungomare promenade is a true coast gem that captivates visitors and locals alike! With its perfect Mediterranean ambiance, this beautiful waterfront promenade stretches along the Adriatic coast, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the sea and the city, creating the perfect setting for a romantic walk by the water.

Take a walk at sunset and admire the beauty of the landscape as the sun sets on the horizon. Then, take a ride on the Bari Ferris wheel nearby, where you can see the city from above, and I assure you, it’s a beautiful sight!

Nearby, on the lively Corso Vittorio Emanuele street, you’ll find Ristorante Biancofiore, which is definitely worth a stop! They offer tasting menus of seafood and land dishes, and both are truly extraordinary!

4 Visit the Fortress of Bari

Discover the history of Bari by visiting its imposing fortress, built in the 13th century to protect the city from enemy attacks. Explore the walls, towers, and inner courtyards as you learn about the fascinating military history of the region.

5 Explore Bari’s Fish Market

I’ll warn you: to fully enjoy the market in all its splendor, you’ll have to get up early, but it’s totally worth it! Immerse yourself in Bari’s local life by visiting its lively fish market. Explore stalls filled with fresh seafood and watch as local fishermen sell their daily catches. And why not? If you can cook at your accommodation, take advantage of buying some super fresh fish! It’s an authentic experience you can’t miss.

6 Relax at Pane e Pomodoro Beach

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and relax at the beautiful Pane e Pomodoro Beach (yes, “Bread and Tomato”). It’s a small beach very close to the city center, you can walk or take a bus there. It has all the amenities, with umbrellas and lounge chairs available for rent.

If you’re planning to visit other beach towns in Puglia (which you can find HERE), you can skip this one (it’s not one of the most beautiful). However, if you’re only visiting Bari, then come enjoy the sun, sand, and sea at this beach while you relax and recharge your energy for further exploration of Bari! It’s a nice spot to watch the sunset. There are also bars and cafés nearby, so you can enjoy the sunset with a coffee or a beer .

7 Visit the Petruzzelli Theater

Discover the architectural beauty of the Petruzzelli Theater, one of Italy’s largest opera houses. If there’s a show during your stay, don’t hesitate to attend! If not, you can admire the magnificent facade of the building as you walk through the city center.

8 Explore the New Town of Bari

Explore Bari’s new town and discover its elegant squares, shops, and cafes. Do some shopping on Via Sparano, one of the most popular shopping streets.

Bari’s new town, also known as “Bari Nuova” offers a fascinating blend of history, culture, and modernity. Here you’ll find elegant avenues like Via Sparano, lined with fashion boutiques, modern cafes, and restaurants, contrasting with the medieval atmosphere of the old town. 9 Visit Piazza del Ferrarese and Piazza Mercantile

Get ready to explore the best that Puglia has to offer. Here are the must-visit places, dining recommendations, and transportation tips. Bari: A Must-Visit in Southern Italy

Bari, the capital of the Puglia region, serves as the perfect gateway to Southern Italy. You can reach it from Rome by plane, train with TrenItalia, or bus with Itabus. It’s a port city steeped in history and culture, offering visitors a perfect blend of ancient and modern architecture. As you wander through the narrow streets of the old town, known as Bari Vecchia, you’ll encounter charming Romanesque churches, lively squares, and authentic trattorias where you can taste delicious local cuisine.

In this city, I recommend staying for at least 3 nights; you can use it as a base to explore nearby villages. If you’re wondering what to do in Bari, here’s a detailed article with the most important places to visit, where to eat, and how to get around.

If you want a quick summary, I’d say don’t miss the historic center of Bari, Via delle Orecchiette where the nonnas make Orecchiette (typical pasta from Southern Italy), the Basilica of San Nicola, the city’s patron saint. Also, be sure to take a stroll along the Lungomare at sunset; here you can enjoy stunning views of the Adriatic Sea while immersing yourself in the relaxed atmosphere of the coast. Monopoli: Enjoy a Day at the Beach on the Adriatic Coast

Located on the Adriatic coast, Monopoli combines rich history with the natural beauty of its beaches. It’s very close to Bari, and there are several trains that can take you there, although ideally, going by car would be best, since trains in Southern Italy are not the most reliable (I once waited for a train for nearly two hours).

I absolutely loved Monopoli; it’s one of the must-do things in Puglia if you’re a beach lover like me :). It’s a small fishing village with narrow streets and picturesque alleys. The best thing you can do is get lost in the old town and discover places of interest like the Cathedral of Maria Santissima della Madia and the Castle of Charles V.

Afterward, relax on one of the charming beaches in the area and enjoy the sun and crystal-clear sea. There are several beaches nearby, each more beautiful than the last; my favorites are the ones to the south. There’s also a lovely bike path you can take (you can rent bikes in the center) and explore the nearby beaches. At the end of the day, I recommend going for an Aperol at the Porto Rosso restaurant, which has a beautiful view of the sea!

Polignano a Mare: Beautiful Coastal Town

Polignano a Mare is a unique coastal city that captivates visitors with its natural beauty and picturesque charm. Perched atop limestone cliffs, this quaint town offers stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and beaches with crystal-clear waters. Moreover, its old town, with narrow streets and whitewashed houses, evokes a sense of authenticity and Italian tradition that will transport you back in time. With its rich history, delicious cuisine, and relaxed atmosphere, there’s much to explore in Polignano a Mare. You can visit the famous hotel/restaurant Grotta Palazzese, well-known on social media for its breathtaking views. Personally, I found it truly overrated. While the view is indeed spectacular, the food isn’t particularly special, and you’re required to spend €195 per person. In my opinion, it’s not worth it, but don’t miss the chance to go and judge the experience for yourself!

For nature lovers, the beaches of Polignano a Mare are a true gem. You can relax on the golden sand, swim in crystal-clear waters, or indulge in water sports like snorkeling or kayaking. Moreover, the cliffs surrounding the town offer unique opportunities for hiking and enjoying spectacular panoramic views.

Alberobello: The Charm of the Trullos (the Most Beautiful Village to Visit in Puglia)

Without a doubt, my favorite place is Alberobello! If there’s one thing to do in Puglia, it’s definitely this! I would recommend staying here for a couple of nights and visiting Locorotondo and Martina Franca from here. Alberobello it’s famous worldwide for its unique constructions known as trullos, which are stone houses with conical roofs. The trullos represent one of the most extraordinary examples of Italian folk architecture. During a period in history when the construction of fixed houses was prohibited (or heavily taxed), these makeshift houses were built without the use of plaster so they could be easily dismantled. Thus, when the king’s delegate was about to arrive to collect taxes, it was enough to remove the cornerstone, and voilà! the houses transformed into piles of stones.

Some must-sees in Alberobello: Take a stroll through the Rione Monti neighborhood, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and admire the picturesque streets filled with white trullos. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Museum of the Territory and the Trullo Soberano to learn more about the history and tradition of this charming city.

Also, visit the Rione Aia Piccola area, a more “residential” area where about 400 trullos are still inhabited. Some of them you can visit to understand how life is in these small constructions. This area is less known and much less commercial, so here you can admire the beauty of Alberobello without the tourist hustle and bustle.

For dining, I recommend Ristorante Il Pinnacolo, the food is excellent, and it has a patio with a beautiful view! For a quicker and more economical meal, don’t miss Coppino, which is delicious!

Locorotondo: The White Village in the Hills of Puglia

Located at the top of a hill in the Valle d’Itria, Locorotondo is a charming white village that seems straight out of a fairy tale. With its cobblestone streets, white houses, and panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards and olive groves, this picturesque village is the perfect destination for those looking to immerse themselves in authentic Italian rural life.

From Alberobello, there are trains and buses available, but I always recommend using buses whenever possible! They are always on time, unlike the trains . If you’re in a hurry, you can visit Locorotondo and Martina Franca in a single day. However, if you have more time, you can spend a day in each and enjoy them leisurely.

Once in Locorotondo, wander around the maze of narrow, steep streets. The white houses adorned with flowers seem like something out of a dream! If you’re looking for beautiful photo spots, you’ll find plenty here! Be sure to visit the beautiful Church of San Giorgio, located in the heart of the village. Stop by a local winery to taste wines produced in the nearby vineyards. Additionally, indulge in the local cuisine and try traditional dishes like orecchiette con cime di rapa (pasta with broccoli). There are many small shops in the center with true gems! Take advantage of buying your souvenirs from Puglia and southern Italy.

Martina Franca: Baroque Elegance in the Heart of Puglia

Martina Franca is a Baroque gem nestled in the heart of Puglia, and it’s a destination you can’t afford to miss on your trip to southern Italy. Completely different from Locorotondo, it will amaze you with its stunning architecture, lively squares, and festive atmosphere.

Let yourself be enchanted by the magnificent Basilica of San Martino, a masterpiece of Puglian Baroque architecture. Explore the historic center of the city, where you’ll find elegant palaces, picturesque churches, and charming boutiques. Also, make sure to visit Piazza Maria Immacolata, the heart of Martina Franca, where you can enjoy an Italian espresso while watching life go by and take several photos in its mirrors like I did
