Welcome to an unforgettable journey through the dazzling beauty of Kenya! From the vast plains with a safari in Tsavo West National Park to the paradisiacal beaches of Malindi and Watamu, get ready to embark on an adventure full of excitement. You’ll immerse yourself in the rich diversity of African wildlife by exploring national parks and reserves, then relax on the magical beaches of the Indian Ocean; I assure you, you’ll be amazed by their white sands and turquoise waters!
Kenya is a destination that captivates everyone. Most travelers go to Kenya for safaris in the Masai Mara, which is beautiful, of course! But I’m going to recommend another route, a less-known itinerary in Kenya, closer to the coast, towards the majestic Tsavo West, so you can awaken all your emotions with a safari but also take advantage of exploring the magical coast of Kenya. I assure you, you won’t regret it!
Some pre-tips: For the safari, I recommend hiring a guide. Although you can perfectly rent a suitable car from a local agency and do it on your own, this is NOT recommended, especially if it's your first safari. After the safari itinerary (Malindi and Watamu), you can easily do it on your own, either by renting a car or using a TukTuk (local transportation), which is super affordable. You don't have to follow the itinerary to the letter, of course! Make it yours! Look at the places and decide which ones interest you or not. These are my secrets of the Kenyan coast, use them wisely 🙂 In Kenya, as in many places in Africa, many people may try to take advantage of tourists. The "Beach Boys," men who are generally on tourist beaches and often offer services such as tours, water activities, fishing excursions, crafts sales, and even "personal" tour guide services, can be VERY insistent. My recommendation is always to set clear boundaries and firmly, but respectfully, ask them to step back, especially if you're a woman traveling alone.
Now, let’s get down to business: a carefully crafted itinerary that combines the thrill of safari with the serenity of the coast. We’re ready to explore the most fascinating corners of Kenya and discover the treasures that await along the way. Get ready for an adventure that will leave you breathless and fill you with memories that will last a lifetime!

Day 1. Arrival in Mombasa
Mombasa is the most important city on the coast of Kenya. It’s a vibrant city, full of history and with an exotic charm. Depending on where you come from and the countries you’ve already visited, Mombasa may seem overwhelming at first, but believe me, it’s a treasure waiting to be discovered!
With a rich history dating back over a thousand years, Mombasa has witnessed the arrival and departure of Arab, Persian, Portuguese, and British traders, each leaving their mark on the city in the form of architecture, culture and traditions. Today, this fusion of influences is reflected in the cultural diversity of Mombasa, where historic mosques, ancient churches, and bustling markets coexist in harmony.
One of the most outstanding attractions of Mombasa is its old town, known as ‘Old Town‘, where narrow cobblestone streets and old buildings transport visitors back in time. Here, you can explore the ancient Portuguese fortress of Fort Jesus, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which offers stunning views of the harbor and the ocean. Additionally, you can get lost in the mazes of the local souks, where you can buy exotic spices, traditional crafts, and unique souvenirs.
Mombasa is not just history and culture; it’s also a paradise for sun and sea lovers (like me!). It has kilometers of white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters! For this first day, after settling into your hotel, I recommend taking a walk along Nyali Beach, which is a bit outside of Mombasa. This beach is perfect for relaxing and enjoying water activities such as snorkeling and diving.
Day 2: Wasini and Kisite Islands
From the nearby village of Shimoni, you can take a boat to explore the Wasini and Kisite islands, which are part of the Kisite-Mpunguti National Marine Park, a protected area known for its impressive marine biodiversity and pristine underwater landscapes. You can’t miss a snorkeling tour to observe dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays, whale sharks, and a wide variety of tropical fish. It’s truly a dream!
Upon returning from your day at the beach, take advantage of exploring the nightlife in Mombasa. I can’t guarantee the best cocktails, but you’ll definitely have a unique experience!
Days 3-5: Let’s Start the Safari in Kenya! Heading to the Impressive Tsavo West!
Imagine waking up to the sound of birds singing, the fresh morning air, and the most breathtaking sunrise views you’ve ever seen in your life! That’s exactly what awaits you at Tsavo West National Park, where you’ll spend the next three days immersed in the wild nature of Kenya.
Each day will begin with an exciting safari in search of African wildlife. From the moment you step into the park, you’ll find yourself surrounded by an incredible diversity of animals, from majestic elephants to agile gazelles and proud lionesses. Every sighting is an adventure! Believe me, seeing these majestic animals in their natural habitat, passing peacefully in front of your Jeep, watching them walk and crossing their gaze is something that touches your heart and leaves you breathless.
The Big 5
Tsavo West National Park hosts an incredible diversity of species. If you’re looking for the “Big Five” here you’ll have the opportunity to see them ALL!
You don’t know what the Big Five are? They are the most iconic and coveted animals in Africa. These five large mammals are the lion, leopard, elephant, African buffalo, and rhinoceros. The term “Big Five” was originally given during the era of big-game hunting in Africa when these animals were considered the most difficult to hunt on foot and therefore the most dangerous and prestigious to hunt.
The most common in Tsavo West is the Elephant. We saw so many every day, and each day they impressed me more! You’ll also have the opportunity to see lots of Giraffes! Although they’re not part of the Big Five, by the end of the Safari, they ended up being some of my favorite animals! Definitely, their elegant (and a bit arrogant 😄) walk has a particular magic.
I’m sure your safari will include a visit to Mzima Springs and the Galana River, where you come face to face with hippos and crocodiles while observing the water (with a rather unique color) flowing from beneath the ground. It’s a surreal experience that makes you feel part of nature itself.
Surely, your safari will include accommodation. When I did this activity, we stayed at a lodge in the heart of Tsavo West, the Ndololo Safari Camp, which has beautiful tents and stunning views. Within the park, there’s a wide variety of hotels and campsites; whichever you choose will be a perfect place to disconnect and immerse yourself in the beauty of African nature.
Days 6-9: Exploration in Malindi and Watamu
After three days of safari adventure in Kenya, it’s time to head to the coast for a few days of relaxation in Malindi. From the moment you arrive in this charming coastal town, you’ll feel like you’ve found a slice of paradise on Earth!
On the way back to Malindi, I suggest making a stop at Camp Gedeng. In this unique space managed by locals, you can observe families of hippos in their natural habitat—it’s a beautiful sight! You can also enjoy local food and a peaceful afternoon, a completely different experience. You’ll need to contact them in advance.
In Malindi, I advise you to look for accommodation overlooking Silversands Beach. You’ll find several options and have an incredible view of the sunrise!
Day 6: Che Sale Beach – Hell’s Kitchen
For this first beach day, my recommendation is to go to Che Sale Beach, also known as the Golden Beach because of the color of its sand. If you’re a lover of surfing or windsurfing (like me), you’re going to love this beach! It has a relaxed atmosphere, isn’t very crowded, so it’s perfect for disconnecting and enjoying the natural beauty of the Kenyan coast. Take the opportunity to have lunch by the beach with some delicious fresh fish!
After your relaxing beach time, head to the Marafa Depression, also known as Hell’s Kitchen. Here, you’ll find yourself surrounded by eroded rock formations that seem to come from another world. It’s a surreal landscape that leaves you breathless and makes you appreciate the incredible beauty and diversity of nature. Don’t miss the sunset from this point; it’s a view you won’t get anywhere else.
Day 7: Malindi
After several days of non-stop excursions, today is a day for a well-deserved rest in Malindi. Relax in the serenity of its beautiful local beaches. Immerse yourself in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, walk along the soft white sand, or simply lie back under the sun and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. For lunch, I recommend trying the delicious local dishes at Swahili Dishes, where you can sample a variety of authentic flavors from Swahili cuisine in a family-friendly environment.
Then, explore Malindi’s craft market. Here, you’ll find a wide variety of traditional crafts and unique souvenirs to take home. Enjoy the hospitality of the people as you walk through the colorful stalls and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of this lively market, don’t forget to negotiate the prices!
To end the day, enjoy an unforgettable dinner and party at Rosada Beach & Restaurant, where good food, live music, and a lively atmosphere await you for a beachside night of fun. Another great spot (just in case) is the White Elephant. In any case, get ready for a unique experience in Malindi that will leave you with memories for a lifetime!
Day 8 Watamu – Sardegna 2 Beach
Today, we’re heading to Watamu! The next few days will also be spent in Watamu, so you might want to change your accommodation to be closer to everything.
Between Malindi and Watamu lies the beautiful Sardegna 2 Beach. You won’t believe that this paradise beach is in Africa! It’s just as stunning as the beaches on the island of Sardegna in Italy. You can also enjoy a delicious lobster for an unbeatable price!
In this paradise, time seems to stand still. Enjoy the beauty and tranquility of nature. Whether you’re lounging on the sand, exploring the reefs, or simply swimming in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, this beach offers an unforgettable experience that will stay with you for a long time!
At the end of the day (before sunset!), head to the coolest spot in Watamu: the Lichthaus Restaurant-bar. With a relaxed atmosphere, delicious food, and cocktails to die for! Add to that the incredible sunset you’ll witness here, and it’s definitely my favorite spot in Watamu! Oh, and don’t forget your swimsuit!
Day 9 Watamu Beach / Garoda Beach
For your last day on the beach in this paradise, I’ll leave you with two fantastic options: Watamu Beach and Garoda Beach. Both are beautiful and offer plenty of activities. I tried an hour of Stand up Paddle, and it was incredible! The views are amazing!
If you’re looking for some truly local food, a great spot is the Crab Shack Dabaso, which also offers beautiful views!
Day 10 Mangroves at Mida Creek
Mida Creek is a wildlife sanctuary located on the coast of Kenya, known for its mangroves, stunning landscapes, and a wide variety of water birds that find refuge in its calm waters. It’s a popular destination for kayaking, hiking, and bird watching. You can spot species like herons, kingfishers, fish eagles, and flamingos.
To end on a high note, let’s head to the heart of Mida Creek, to a dreamy place: The Baobab Dream House! It’s a small refuge managed by locals and they offer incredible activities you won’t find anywhere else! Sunset canoe rides (my favorite!), motorcycle tours, and much more! I can only tell you one thing: Contact them! Plan your stay or activities with them, they are fantastic!
Day 11 Return to Mombasa
The time has come to bid farewell to this beautiful journey through Kenya 🙁 Today, all that’s left is the return to Mombasa and then back home. I assure you that you’ll say goodbye to Kenya with gratitude and nostalgia. Your mind and heart will be filled with unforgettable memories: the vast herds of elephants in Tsavo, the paradise beaches of Watamu, the bustling streets of Mombasa. You’ll always carry with you the shared moments, the laughter, and the adventures that have enriched your spirit and undoubtedly fueled your passion for exploring the world! You’ll return home loving Kenya, I assure you! See you soon, dear Kenya!
I hope this journey has inspired you as much as it has inspired me, and that you'll take with you not only photographs but also life lessons and moments of connection with the beauty of the world around us.
